What happens at our first session?

We’re make it a priority to help you and your child feel safe and respected during your sessions. It’s also helpful to chat to your child beforehand so they know what to expect (view our FAQs for help with this). Here’s typically what happens:

  1. Upon booking, first we chat to you over the phone or via email to make sure we can help. If we’re the right fit for each other, we’ll book in a time that suits.

  2. You’ll receive an email confirmation and link to complete new client intake and consent forms. A reminder will be sent 5 days prior to your appointment.

  3. The first session will be a parent-only session, unless otherwise discussed. This allows for a thorough child and family history to be taken and an open discussion about your concerns. You will have an opportunity to talk about what has led you to seek psychological services for your child, how you are hoping we can help and develop a plan and treatment goals for your child.

  4. After the session, you’ll book future sessions and make payment. Payment is made either via Eftpos or stored credit card. We don’t bulk bill but will send your claim to Medicare directly, if eligible, or provide you with an invoice to make your claims as needed.

  5. Initial sessions with your child will focus on establishing rapport, gaining a shared understanding of their presenting concerns and developing a treatment plan. Treatment with children usually involves their parents. This may include attending sessions with your child or attending at the start and end of your child’s sessions to provide an update and debrief on your child’s sessions.
